Inside My Brain

06-12-2013 I'm a Jimmy Buffett fan. And I turned Sarah into one. See for yourself: But first, way back in the day, I had to learn about Jimmy Buffett. You know the adage: Learn, Do, Teach. The teaching I received was back at Joe's card shop during my time "in college." And yes, I have to put that in quotation marks since I spent more time traveling and dealing cards than I did with my nose in a book. Much like any other retail establishment, time spent in a card shop isn't always exciting time. Something is needed to help pass the hours while not being too much of a distraction (read: TV). Often, that something was a bit of Buffett music. Banana Wind and Coconut Telegraph were frequent fliers in our rotation. Incidentally, they also gave excellent insight on how island rumor mills work and the hazards of being mistaken for a drug-bearing plane, but that's beside the point. When we were setting up at 40+ card shows per year, we covered 1000s of miles of boring highway listening to Buffett as well. But with a largely expanded catalog...everything back from A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean to the then-recent album that accompanied his failed attempt at a play, Don't Stop the Carnival. (While the songs on the latter don't have the power to stand out individually, the album as a whole is pretty good if you have a chance to listen all the way through.) Now that we have Radio Margaritaville and things of Pandora's nature, I don't need to go on about what songs are Buffett-like, but I'm still going to. I've always liked the songs he covered. Jimmy's voice can't usually match the smoothness of the original performer's, so that is something you just have to deal with. Off the top of my head, I can think of a few covers he has released on his own albums:
Back on course... There are a handful of very Buffett-y feeling songs that I would enjoy him covering. (Live versions where possible for maximum fun...mostly from a haircut and wardrobe perspective.) Check these out when you're in the mood: Weird video accompaniment, but I do like the stereo aspect... And many more, of course, but that's a good start. And if all this Buffett talk seems fairly random, I guess it's just a long-winded way of throwing some news out there. There was another from Coconut Telegraph that always stuck with me - a song about enjoying what you do for a living. More on this news in Part 2 of this column (release date: TBD/soon). But to that end, I am now a full-time sportscard dealer.
