8-02-06 Sometimes in life, you feel depressed and get down on yourself. Sometimes things aren't going your way and your friends and family can lift your spirits. Other times, things aren't that simple. These are the times you can't find the motivation to roll yourself out of bed. You don't even watch TV; you stare blankly at it. After a few hours of sitting on the couch, motionless, you realize there is a stream of drool connected from your lip to your leg. And you don't even care. That's how I feel when I look at these picks right now. And I don't understand it. The picks looked so good last time, not to mention the beginning of the season. First I will display the bad news. Then I will examine whether some of the teams can salvage my original goals, or if I should look into selling my organs.
Ick! You can see that three of our four 5-point picks have turned against us, with only Pittsburgh's terrible-ness salvaging us there. I officialy wrote off Arizona in my last column, so no sense worrying about them. Cleveland and Anaheim I really hoped would come through like champions, but only the latter is doing so. And they still have some ground to cover for us to cover. I already considered Pittsburgh, KC, and the Chicago Cubs in the bag, and I'm sticking to those predictions. Milwaukee and Toronto both had to start losing for our purposes, and they have obliged. Both are rarities in that they switched from our minus to positive side. Seattle also did that by improving their game. Many more teams fell from black to red ink on our scorecards, but we don't need to get into all of that. So who can we salvage? Any 5-point picks? I have my doubts about Houston. They have decent hitting, better than average pitching, and the Rocket for a shot in the arm, but still they keep losing. Texas is right there for us. That pick should come down to the wire, but the encouraging thing is they at least chased something at the trade deadline. Meanwhile, the Phillies took that opportunity to crap on their chances for a run at our number and the wildcard by giving, er, trading away solid hitting and pitching in Abreu and Lidle. Another bonus for us is that the Nationals decided to keep Alfonso Soriano. They have a good young nucleus there and I already smell the 'over' cooking up for next year's feast. But before next year, we can let these picks simmer for a few more weeks and see if they improve at all. Have fun! -T |
